Leaders: Howard Kaplan, howardkaplan@yahoo.com, (404) 308-0330
Bonnie Rubin, tazlina25@comcast.net, 404-788-5788
You've had enough time to wake up from the revelry of the night
before. Whatever you did to say good-bye to 2008, come start 2009
off with our favorite New Year's Day activity - a hike at Stone
Mountain Park.
What a great way to reconnect with the Mosaic friends you made in
2008, 2007, 2006, 2005 .....
We'll be hiking on the Cherokee Trail, which goes around the
mountain, not up, and starting at the Confederate Hall location
near the West Gate entrance.
Ability level/description of trail: Moderate 6-mile loop hike.
The trail is along the lower granite slope of the mountain through
beautiful wooded areas around the lake. Some places may be wet if it
has rained recently. There are some stream crossings, and there will
be some roots and rocks in places.
Elevation is minimal, but there are a few hilly areas.
Meeting time: Noon, 12:00 P.M.
Departing time: 12:15 P.M.
Meeting location: Stone Mountain Elementary School,
6720 James B. Rivers Drive, Stone Mountain, Georgia.
We will walk into the park through the West Gate to the
Confederate Hall area to avoid the $8.00 parking fee.
If you have a parking pass to Stone Mountain Park and prefer,
you can meet us at the base of the walk-up trail
in front of the bathrooms, but let me know you'll be there.
The driving directions to the school are below.
What to bring: Boots are strongly recommended (see trail description).
Please bring plenty of water to hydrate (this is a detox hike);
snacks and lunch for the trail; layer appropriately for the weather.
Dogs: "Yes but," which means: Dogs on leashes and/or you must be
in control of your dog at all times. If there is a large group of
people and dogs, this leader will request the dog hikers to bring up
the rear.
Weather contingency:
Hike may be cancelled if it's raining or inclement weather.
Please call the leader before heading out.
Cost: Free for members, $5 nonmember fee or become a member
for just $25/year.
